Biography

The boy who would be "Born" was born Ofosu Jones-Quartey on a hot August day in Washington, DC. Early influences came from his father's extensive collection John Coltrane records, and the larger-than-life personality of Frank Sinatra left a deep impression on the young Ghanaian-American. But Born's musical upbringing was eventually dominated by his love for hip hop and electronic music, drawing heavy influences from the likes of Rza, Kanye West, Diplo, Jay-Z, Ghostface, M.I.A. and The Clipse to name a few.

While attending American University, Born met the artists who would become his musical family, including singer Deborah Bond, rappers Tim Hicks & Rashad Dobbins of the Cornel West Theory, DJ AB Logic, and many others. This collective, loosely known as "The Rebels" would eventually grow to dominate the DC underground hip hop, soul and electronic music scenes.

After naming himself "Born Infinite", and having established himself as a top solo MC in the city, Born soon met New York native and fellow lyricist, Agua. The two formed a quick bond, eventually creating the duo Shambhala and releasing their debut, "The Lotus Of…" to rave reviews. The album, full of brooding melodies and themes of eastern mysticism was groundbreaking, and is widely regarded as an "underground cult classic". A heavy national and international touring schedule followed, as Born and Agua became a huge force in the DC hip hop scene. (Google "Shambhala, The Lotus Of" for more...)

After returning from a Shambhala tour in Taiwan, Born decided it was time to return to his roots as a soloist. He dropped the "Infinite" from his stage name after his producer Imani Beats warned that "people may not be able to pronounce 'Infinite' in Japan". It was in that moment that Born was re-born as Born I Music (or simply "Born I" for short). Next, he partnered his newly-formed production company G&D-NewSinatra with Asahra Music and began working at break-neck speed. The team spent over a year recording hundreds of songs, developing a totally new sound, one that expressed Born's main influences: hip hop, electronica, pop and world rhythms. In the end it was clear that Born had created something truly original - a musical landscape as engaging and intense as the man himself.

Fresh off the heels of his new mixtape "RE:Born - Chairman of the Board", including his mindblowing freestyle & video over Miguel & J.Cole's "All I Want is You" instrumental, Born I Music is taking aim at the globe with his stadium-ready debut album "TOMORROW IS TODAY".

The road to the future is here and Born is sitting comfortably in the driver's seat. Buckle up. Let's go for a ride.
