Biography

She travelled to new shores in search of something she could not find home. She opened her heart to songwriting and Kolai was happy to put her japanese words to music. O de Mars is the first of these songs released on Asahra.

There's something about a classic song that is eternal. The original recording ages like a fine wine. With the passing of time and with each new listening we come to appreciate it more. Originally composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Waters of March is one of the most popular bossa nova songs of all time. Art Garfunkel, Cassandra Wilson, Yo Yo Ma and many others have recorded it.

The most famous version remains the 1974 duet between Elis Regina and Jobim himself. It is with this recording in mind that Fuki and Kolai approached the song. Waters of March talks about the passing of time and the inevitability of death. Like a stream of consciousness it paints snapshots of the end of a season and the transition to another one.

Interestingly, Jobim's initial point of view was that of a person living in the southern hemisphere. For him March was the end of summer and the beginning of winter. When he adapted the lyrics to English he wrote from the perspective of someone living in the northern hemisphere.

By singing to each other in Japanese and French, Fuki and Kolai add to this north/south perspective an east/west dynamic. Their electronic take on this bossa nova classic is in tune with Asahra's vision of music as a bridge between people across time and space. Where ever you are we hope our Waters of March lift your spirit.
